The Malvern Hills and Westward
Twelve
years ago Archie Miles was commissioned to compose
a photo essay upon the countryside on and around the
Malvern Hills, which had been so inspirational to
one of Britain's greatest composers, Sir Edward Elgar.
What began as a commercial assignment ended up as
a personal odyssey, culminating in his decision, along
with that of his family, to move into a dilapidated
farmstead in rural Herefordshire.

This
book is an exploration of Archie's adopted countryside,
which has never ceased to inspire and delight him
all these years. The Malvern Hills command a presence
from wherever they can be seen, whether it's the glancing
sunlight gilding the tops or morning mists rolling
away to the gently undulating landscape of Herefordshire.

Villages,
many of which have barely changed over the last fifty
years, are linked by sleepy little lanes, lined by ancient
hedgerows and bedecked with wild flowers. Dramatic black
and white timber-framed farms and cottages are set off
by mellow brick or the local red sandstone. The distinctive
Hereford cattle can still be found peacefully grazing
in lush meadows. .

 |
Orchards,
full of honey sweet blossom in spring, hang heavy
with an amazing variety of sumptuous fruit in autumn.
The pungent aroma of the hop harvest. The red earth
furrow of the horse drawn plough
Here
is the place where the pace of life is more leisurely;
the air is pure; the view is stunning.
